2.
Analyzing the Data
Gather data from
discipline records from last year before our discipline procedure was campus
wide
Collect data from
discipline reports for this year now that we are using CHAMPS campus wide.
Meet with site
supervisor and assistant principal to analyze the data and gather information
from it.

Gather information
from discipline reports for the previous school year (11-12)
10/12
Collect and log
discipline referrals from the campus records weekly beginning 10/12
Discuss the results of
the researcher with site supervisor and assistant principal and decide if
there was a significant decrease in discipline.
|
Create graphs of the
discipline reports from this year.
Compare these reports
to the data from the previous school year
Discuss differences
found in the data with the site supervisor and assistant principal.
|
3.
Developing Deeper Understanding
After gathering the
data, I will begin to look for trends in discipline.
If changes need to be
made in expectations, they will be proposed.
Factors that impact
student discipline will be noted and review with the site supervisor.

steps are being taken to prevent students from receiving office referrals.
Explore the
differences in our campus discipline reports in comparison to other similar
campuses across the district.

My Plan For Action

Tamra, it looks like you got a good jump-start in the early stages of your plan and you are following the correct steps of planning, inquiry, data collection, analysis, reflection with plans to share recommendations for change. It looks like you are giving yourself plenty of time to gather all data and some pieces of data may not be available until a particular point in time. Looks great!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know the CHAMPS system. Can it generate any kind of comprehensive reports? I mean, can you assess trends based on the inputs administrators need to give the system when processing referrals, or will you have to do that assessment yourself? Are you prepared to take the time of year into account as you assess the referral data? In my experience, discipline issues peak at certain times of the year, closer to holidays, wanes around standardized testing windows, picks up again toward year's end. Just a few thoughts to consider as you set sail. I look forward to learning whether your campus's expectations are in line with the reality you want to see for your students and your discipline paradigm.
ReplyDeleteCHAMPS is just a template for expecations. C-Coverversation H-Help A-Activity M-Movement P-Participation S-Success.
ReplyDeleteSo a champs plan for teacher lecture would be
C- voice level is 1 ft
H- get help by raising hand or calling out
A- taking notes, actively answering prompts from teacher
M- in seat, or moving so that board is visible. You may also sharpen your pencil
P- working on note-taking and assigned tasks
S- SUCCESS! (ultimate goal)
So basically instead of each teacher having his/her own rules we create plans for different activities that they follow. There is no way to gather reports other than to compare the referrals from last year when we didn't use CHAMPS and this year when we did.
Hope that sort of explains it.
Thanks!
Great plan! What types of "trends in discipline referrals" are you anticipating? Have you thought about the categories in which you'll group the referrals, or are you going to wait to first review the data before you look for patterns?
ReplyDeleteTrends would be like more referrals in spring or closer to holidays. I have most of the categories ironed out so that while I'm collecting I can group the referrals as I go.
DeleteI worked in a district that had pretty good results on a 9th grade campus using the CHAMPS program, so I'm curious to see what your findings are. Are you looking at particular groups within the discipline spectrum such as minorities, SPED, Economically Disadvantaged students? I ask because we have found that our groups that had the most discipline referrals also scored the lowest on state and district assessments. It sparked some interesting conversations at a staff development. Good luck!
